Hiking the Cumbria Way - Day 2 - ending with a SUMMIT Wild Camp!
This is day two of walking the Cumbria Way 2024. It was a long solo backpacking day with a cracking wild camping spot on top of the Wainwright 'Great Calva' at 690m in the north of the Lake District National Park.
I left Bays Brown Campsite at 9:30am and started thru hiking towards Mickleden past the Langdales Pikes. Towards the bottom at Mickleden is the start of Stake Pass towards Rosthwaite Fell. This is a really nice ascent hiking alongside Stake Gill on the Cumbrian Way.
Follow my Insta for daily updates backpacking_uk
After the summit (478m) I made my way towards Derwentwater stopping at Flock-Inn Tea Room, Rosthwaite for some lunch.
I stopped again at Keswick to watch England play Denmark before heading up to the Northern Fells.
I decided to go slightly off piste and summit camped on Great Calve (690m) a short distance from Skiddaw House.
A tough end to a long day, but it was well worth it for the epic views of the Northern Fells and watching the sun set.
The backpacking and camping gear I took is listed below:
I buy my 3F UL Gear tents from Camperlists who stock all variants. All prices includes VAT and Duty and they're all genuine unlike many copies on AliExpress and Amazon.

Here is a real life example of how to save weight on your backpacking gear for free. How is this possible? It's simply about thinking about what you really need for your backpacking and wild camping trip. My backpacking bag including food and 1L of water weighed 15kg. An honest review from the use of this tent in tropical Asia Area here in Hong Kong. This is a 3 season tent for Spring, Autumn, Winter, but not Summer. Because the temp here reached 35-40 Celsius degrees, 90% humidity. If you use this tent in the summer of Hong Kong. You need to find a way to block the sun light and good air ventilation.

Great video. I've just saved 2kg. I ditched my fleece and waterproof trousers, and instead just relied on lightweight running top and shorts. I then ditched all my dry bags and then used a folding system when adding gear in my rucksack. I then change my tent for a X Mid 2.

Very happy with the quality of this tent, but I am struggling with setting it up proper. The inner tent seems too large compared to the outer. It remains very baggy inside unless I pitch it so that 2 of the 4 corners peek outside of the outer tent. Anyone got some tips?

Interested to know how you've gone with the Quest 4. Mine have lost all waterproofing after about 10 x 2 day walks. One fully soaked foot within an hour of easy (gravel path) walking in light rain. A real shame, as they are super comfortable, with excellent ankle support and nice lacing control. Agree with you on the wet rock grip though. I'm moving onto the AKU to see whether they are more durable. Nice video. Subscribed!

Its getting tougher finding comfortable footwear with so many brands facing issues. I have Salomon boots like yours but find them heavy and tiring. Looking to do the Great Glen Way which is fairly flat so need decent footwear that is forgiving on hard surfaces and trails, especially since I will be wildcamping and carrying a 58ltr backpack. Meindl and Keen suffer from delamination issues, mesh shoes aren't durable, some soles are better at gripping on wet surfaces than others. Jeezo. Looking at a mid cut boot now, wide toe box, orthopaedic insole, leather or suede type fabric. Great channel Andy. Atb.

My pack weight was 10.5kg. I think I could get down to about 8kg, though that would include replacing my old sleeping bag. I think pack weight is more important than many realise. Yes, its not much as a percentage of your body weight, but its weight you're not used to carrying so it seems to put a greater strain on your efforts.

very impressed with 30 miles, I think I might have done 20, but it took me 8 or 9 days, or something, but I had £80 of equipment, from second hand shops, and the rucksack was £13 off gumtree the guy had restitched straps in wider position, it was kind of like being midly crucified, but yeah, If you want to get gas, it is cheaper in drymen, £8, crainlarich was good for food, the newsagent, but the gas was £12 for same stuff, I found the newsagent by wellies abit pricey, and bought alot of rubbish, I got food poisoned morrisons walked it back from fort william, but yeah,
